Heather Labonté – Bellydance Workshop
Saturday, September 15 at 1 PM – 5:30 PM
Bombproof Belly Dancer (1:00 – 3:00 pm, 2 hours)
Do you like drilling? I like drilling. The bombproof belly dancer’s technique has been tested from every possible attack vector and can withstand the unusual musical, stylistic, and postural demands of any stylization. On your journey towards technical badass-ery, we’ll hit the ground running with some quickly, strictly redefined fundamentals with an emphasis on precision and disciplined movement.
Our focus will be less on drilling movement for performance, rather honing in on exercises that test and improve the integrity of our technique from every possible angle.
Technique Stylization Sampler (3:15 – 5:15, 2 hrs)
Let’s put the em-PHA-sis on a different syl-LA-ble. Extensively trained across multiple disciplines of dance, Heather will share insights into the ways in which belly dance movements can be reimagined and reframed using the technical and stylistic elements of dance forms we reference and fuse most often in fusion and modern belly dance.
In this workshop, we will take intermediate level movements and combinations, drilled to perfection. We will dissect in terms of technique, dynamics, levels, posture, timing, and musicality, and stylize according to jazz funk and contemporary dance, with time to explore and discuss customizing movement individually as well.
Before Saturday, Sept 1 $85
Sept 1 and onwards: $100

Heather Labonté’s twenty-two year dance adventure spans belly dance, jazz, ballet, and contemporary, among others. Known for her compelling emotional command of audiences, extensive technical knowledge, and fondness for rule-breaking, Heather loves to make, teach, and perform dances that push the boundaries of what our dance form is, and can be.
She teaches in Toronto, where she also performs regularly as a soloist, with special appearances across North America and Europe, including Tribal Momentum (Montreal, QC), The Massive Spectacular (Las Vegas, US), Tribal Revolution (Chicago, US), and Infusion Emporium (Wolverhampton, UK), among others.
In eight years as a member of Lavish Dance Company, she co-choreographed more than a dozen pieces with company director Audra Simmons, including three full length shows (Fragment/Repair, harmony/discord, and The Lavish Project 2015) as well as developing The Lavish Project 2014 with Heather Stants and Samantha Emanuel.
An avid collaborator, Heather has contributed to and performed regularly as a cast member of Mira Betz’s Mirapiece Theatre (Clickbait, Waters of Change, Massive Spectacular 2013) and as a member of Rin Ajna’s Myriad performance group. She has also performed with Inga Petermann, Kimberly Larkspur, Seraka, Maddie Bolek, Alexis Southall, among others.
Heather holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in History and Political Science. In her spare time (i.e. Monday to Friday, 9-5) she is a PR girl. She is also an internationally touring Shibari teacher and performer, and continues her studies in belly dance, jazz, and martial arts. Her next project, et alia dance, is forthcoming.
